lets go for a ride

« on: February 07, 2010, 12:22:51 PM »

Hi all, I have been playing with the fuel tank on my bike for a while trying to get it looking good
here's it on the bike before I did anything

I sanded and scraped all the old plastic and crap to get it looking like this

Sanded with 400 sandpaper to get a rough look
Then I Flame treated the tank with a gas torch and light blue flame waved lightly over the surface ( was told this helps the epoxy stick with the sanding, chemical and mechanical attachment). Then one coat of epoxy resin, which came from a boat and tackle shop $10.70 for 200ml

Let set for a few hours
light sanding again 400 grit paper
second coat and same deal

left over night to dry and then a sand with 400, 800, and then 1200 grit paper and cutting compond and then polish to shine,
then apply decals with the help of wife's hair dryer

and then a couple of coats of Auto clear coat

now I only have give it a polish and put it back together. Put fuel in it a away we go. I will drain the tank after each ride and see how it goes Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Nice job Ant, did you take any pics after you flamed it?  What did it look like after you did it. I was thinking of rubbing a tank back and after noticing the burn/shine you get if you leave the buff in the same area to long was thinking to light flame and see what it does.

Interested to see if the fuel bleeds through over time. Hope it works, if it does I ll be trying he same thing...

cheers

Jay, after the flame treatment it didn't look that different, but when you are doing it you can see the plastic change a bit, it sort of takes the furry bits of it. The flame treatment is only to help the epoxy stick to the plastic.
I hope it lasts

Good way of taking the fluff off, or maybe it could be a way to skip a few sand paper grades...

I've got an old tank I reckon I'll try it...

cheers

Those things were a poster, a fancy paint job.Ford was too scared to dose them up with goodness.

but there you are wrong Bob Holden had a whinge and put a end to the GT's that flogged holden at Bathurst saying that ford was selling race cars to the public probably true but the was not many gtho's any way although standard gt's went quite good the cobra came out because they had 400 spare coupe bodies left over and so these were just made to get rid of them but they could be optioned with a either 302 351 T bar auto or 4 speed manual.

there were the other special edition coupes the xa superbird the xb john goss special.

there wasnt a massive amount of gt's made but there are a stack registered through vic roads about 25000 or something stupid so when you see them you think oh that is probably a mock up.

With the tank has any one tryed that plastic renew stuff on evil bay. Smiley

GTHO and the Cobra were two different eras frosty.. the GTHO V8 toranas and V8 Chargers were 'shelved' because of a front page news artical about the supercars being available to the public.. google "HO down the hume"

besides....the GTHO was beaten by Brocky in his 6 cylinder torana in 1972...

The RPO falcons were basically the GT parts being used by special order in the XA onwards..

dunno about the Cobras but I'm sure they're more cooking than a Taxi but not quite the car they raced... unlike a GTHO falcon or a GTR XU-1 which was a walk into the showroom and buy one type of car...

the 1-2 XC falcon finsh was a good show absolutely no doubt about it!! there was though the two years before it was the L34 torana doing 1st and second... and the year after it the A9X torana was a 1-2 and then the next year another 1-2 and then the VC commodore did a 1-2...
http://all...race03.htm

I wasn't born when these were racing but I know how to google the correct information before claiming that Holden is better or worse than a Ford or vice versa.

By the way Ant the tank looks fantastic!!

Cheers!

Ha ha geez I didnt want to make any one mad I knew it wasnt holden that stirred it up Wink

can you imagine trying to shoehorn a xy or xa xb xc coupe around bathurst they are big cars with no braking ability plus brock was a grouse driver he would have done well in any car I think alot depends on who is driving it is funny how no matter what sport there are good competitors and they are guys who are a class above everyone else how I dont know they are just good.

Lowndes is going to holden he will still go good there I remember the year it looked like he was home and that plastic bag blew in the radiator and it over heated. It would be good if you could watch all the old bathursts I dont know if the sell a disc collection??
