TMX News November 1979 IT250 / IT400 test
« on: January 30, 2010, 05:35:49 AM »
This topic is a reproduction of the test that appeared in Nov 1979 of the IT250 / IT400.

Naturally you would think that the logical IT250 and IT400 to test would have been the F models, or even the G models that must have been just round the corner.

However, after reading the mostly negative reviews I looked a little more closely at the models tested and they are clearly an IT250D and and IT400D. So by November 1979 the bikes would have been 3 model Years old !   No wonder the suspension was criticised !!

Also the implication was that they were available from the importers, Mitsui Machinery Sales, but the first IT's available to the public were not released until early 1980 when the G models became available.

Please excuse the copy quality as the test was taken from a full sized newspaper style publication. Thankyou Sony Cybershot set to Macro !!! Also Photobucket didn't like the massive file size so the image is a bit small.

Had this test until the big clear-out of 2001 !!

They were unsold US IT250D and IT400D models if I remember correctly, and brought in to gauge the UK's opinion of the models.
Why they didn't bring in the 175 in beyond belief.

After reading that test it's surprising anyone ever bought an IT in the UK !!

Martin.

Thanks, Dave!  Good read despite the cut-off right margin and small print :-\

I think these may be '78 models, only because they mention the 6 speed of the 250 which came out in '78.  The 400 was unchanged between '77 and '78.

They may have played a different tune had they tested the '79's.  More travel, less rake at the front and chrome-moly frames and swingarms with air assisted forks.  My understanding is they were miles better.  We'll see once I get the 400 up and going and can play the '79 250 off the '77 400.  Nice I can do that! 8)
'79 IT 250 F x 2
'83 PW 80
'93 DR 350 S
'90 600 Katana

Well spotted Ron !!
It still makes the bikes nearly two model Years old at the date of test.
