The Frame/ swingarm/ motor bolt is stuck
« on: June 13, 2019, 02:43:16 PM »

Hi I have listed this under general as this issues could apply to most bikes.

The Frame/ swingarm/ motor bolt is stuck

This is a Wr500 the bearings seem good but I was wanting to grease all bearings before my first ride. The bike is fully back together now I left it as is as I have damaged items before when tackling tasks unprepared. I?m looking for advice so when I give this another shot I?m more prepared so I don?t damage anything.

I have tied two methods below and lots of WD40 Penetrant and CRC Penetr8

4 pound hammer & brass punch, this was on a bike stand, I feel as if I need to lean the bike up against a solid wall with a block of wood and try this again as I feel a lot of energy is getting lost in the bike and stand.

6mm threaded rod arranged as a puller through the bolt, to pull it out. - Strips 6mm thread, 8mm rod could probably do but is just too big to fit through the bolt hole.

What are you guys doing for this issue.

I've done a few seized swinging arms on the IT range and a few on H**da XR's.

Sometimes you can use the 'persistant' method of tapping the spindle alternatively from both sides after putting some heat and lube into the seized area. Once you get a little bit of movement you have won most of the battle..... You just keep at it !.... Turning-up a mandrel on a lathe to fit on the spindle will preserve it from the sustained bludgeoning.
I've done a H**da XR250 Baja using this method, it probably took half a day's work, a full can of WD40 and a couple of cans of propane to free up the spindle.

Usually though, I end up heaving the frame, engine and swinging arm into a press, supporting the frame around the seized area and using heat, lube and mild pressing power to free the spindle...... You need to go really careful with the support as it is likely you will damage the frame otherwise......

Cheers,

Dave R.

I've had this a couple of times.  I laid the bike down on a concrete floor with a short piece of scaffold tube to support the frame.  As you said, most of the energy is being taken by the bike when on the stand.
Form my recent experience with seized spokes I'd say acetone ATF mix works well at penetrating rusted parts.
It took a few hours...  good luck  :)

Soaked mine with WD40 etc.
Tapped it with a hammer.
Struck it with a hammer.
Belted it with a hammer.
Decided I was gonna break something so left it.
For 12 months...
Backed off nut.
Tapped it with a hammer.
Out it popped.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

GRIP AND RIP CRAIG AND CHRISSO!!!

I know it is not OH&S approved
But a hammer drill on just the hammer mode should punch it out, cut the end off an old drill bit

cool, sounds like patience and persistence is the key or a hammer drill Hahaha!!!!!! yeah!!!!

I like the hammer drill idea, it makes me think that any penetrating spray may make some sorta travel and just seems like it could work, have you used this idea before with luck sluggish7??

thanks

Sounds like a hammer drill might work  :D  If it moves I'd get some more WD 40 in there and then push it back again and repeat.  If you just keep going in one direction it might bind again on the way out.  Wear some eye protection in case something shatters  8)

Have used the hammer drill several times to punch out seized swing arm bolts in ITs
