Street legal wiring harness for 82 IT465
« on: January 14, 2019, 05:24:26 AM »
Just purchase a 82 It465 with the intention of making her street legal here in Las Vegas.  The DMV here requires high & low beam front light, brake light, signals,and horn. Does anyone know if the harness and/or parts from the DT, or XT models will fit?  If so what years?  Is there a company makes a harness that meet these requirements? Any help would be appreciated.

It's going to be a lot of effort and if you are not comfortable working with vehicle electrics it would probably be better to get someone else to do the work.

Something like this could probably be adapted to the IT465:

You need to decide whether you want to run a DC system with a battery or an AC system without.

Cheers,

This might come in front of me to, if I get mine plated. as mine is a 1981, and local law says turn signals as odometer not needed until 1984, I just need a hi-low beam switsh as brake light switch + some wires to get all lights needed!

The hard part will be to find a cheap 81-82 IT250 frame whit documents to get it street legal, only way as mine is a US import whit out documents...

We sometimes feel hard done by in the UK, but I'm feeling your pain Guys.

I have a "broadly" road legal IT200.

Lights = none
Indicators = none
Mirrors = none
Speedo = not sure, but I fitted one anyway.
Has to have a horn  ;D

Not allowed to ride it in the dark or conditions of reduced visibility.

There are differences between the standards required to pass an MOT test, which validates the vehicle is safe for use on the road (at  the time of the test), and the construction and use regs that the OEM manufacturer has to meet before selling a bike.

I like to think of these as "grey" areas  ;D

If I seriously upset the plod, then I'm sure they'd get the rule book out and find a whole list of reasons why I shouldn't ride on the road.
Makes sense to just try and keep a low profile, don't ask, don't tell.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

GRIP AND RIP CRAIG AND CHRISSO!!!

My 1982 IT250J is street legal here in Vermont. Had to change tail light because it needed to have a clear lens to shine on plate which original lens was all red and had to add plate holder/bracket. Tires had to be marked DOT approved. Also added air horn on my handle bars along with short post mirror. Wired a three way switch from a hardware store to my head lights to get the high and low beam I needed. Added a brake light switch and connected that into my original wire harness. Also added a speedo but didn't need it to pass inspection. Not a great night rider. Because I'm running off a magneto and not a battery lights are very weak when you don't have your revs up. Works fine for me in the daytime although I run with headlights off to give me a strong tail and brake light. with headlight on tail lights are weak. My wire harness is original just had to tap into it.
