IT456 Cluch Basket Replacment Rivets
« on: January 07, 2019, 01:24:29 AM »
Hi All,
Need to replace the outer clutch basket on my IT due to a broken finger.
I have bought a replacement from a IT 400 however the primary drive is a different size so I have removed the basket off the drive by drilling and drifting out the rivets.
Now to the question!
Where can I get replacement rivets (8.25mm or 0.325inch and 30mm long) or is there a recommended tried and test other fixing method?
Having done this before where I replaced the cush drives rubbers on my RD350 I hammered the rivets as per the original spec as for that bike you can buy a kit.
I cannot find one for the IT.

See the pictures attached of the work and rivets needs.

Any help appreciated

Have you tried Yambits or Moto duro?
I have bought counter sunk clutch rivets, they may have mushroom head rivets like yours?.

Cheers,
Steve.

Quick search showed these:

http://trfastenings.com/Products/Catalogue/fasteners-for-sheet-metal/Solid-and-Tubular-Rivets/Solid-Rivets/Round-Head/TR00030508-000

To be honest, it might be easier to ask a local engineering company to make a few for you out of mild steel.

If you get really stuck, I guess I could make some for you.

Cheers,

Dave.

Thanks all for the advice and the offer to make some 😁
Placed an order on eBay from the fastener shop for some at 8mm x 30mm.
Wanted 8.25 but guessing the hammer process will fatten then up.
Yambits and Motoduro a good call but will leave them until last option.
Will let you know how I get on in the coming weeks.

If anyone wants a primary gear for a 1979 IT 400 I have one spare but with no basket attached.

I got mine from here http://www.davroproducts.com.au/products.html

I made a collet for the lathe to cut them to length and then made a tool to squash them in the press. Works a treat.

I remember snap riveting a project in school metalwork class.
Had to calculate the volume of the snap head, then extrapolate that into a cylinder length to calculate the length of rivet required (grip length + enough metal to form the snap)
Curiously, in 40 years of Design Engineering I've never had to do it again!!!  ;D

Go to a place that deals with re-lining truck brakes. They use rivets to hold the lining material onto the shoes and are peined over to hold them on. I found some suitable rivets years ago when I restored my IT465.

and the ones you sourced for me went into one of my baskets.

worked a treat, you'd never know the basket had been apart/built from parts

even doing it rough with a big hammer and a big drift to pien them over didn't make any difference
