DT125 whit TZR engine Question
« on: June 18, 2017, 04:37:30 PM »
A friend of mine just buoght a 84 or 85 DT125LC, 34Y is the frame number start, but it has a engine from a TZR125 Yamaha, and that make the shift pattern is the wrong way, one up and 5 down.... great for a tarmac track bike, but not a dirt bike.
From what I know the TZR125, that came 1987 and lasted to -92, donated its basic engine for the DT125R that came in -89. The 2 has some power difference, like the DT vs RD/RZ, but other should be basically same. Now can it be as simple as just the shift drum that is the only difference to make the shift pattern difference?
In Garage, Yamaha s: -83 IT175, -86 IT200, -81 IT465, -90 XT600Z,
Honda s: -97 CR125R, BMW: -11 R1200GS 30th edition

Maybe ! I don't honestly know, but it would be worth looking at the online parts lists for both bikes and comparing the relevant part numbers.

Years ago I did a similar swap with a Kawasaki AE50 and an AR50 - the shift patterns were also different.  it was simply a matter of rotating the shift drum through 180degrees and them moving the shift indexer.

My guess is that it will be pretty much the same for the DT/TZR
