WR500 with YZ250 pipe?
« on: May 11, 2017, 08:49:55 AM »
I was told that a pipe from a 1992 YZ250 will fit on a WR500 and you don't have to do anything to the silencer, Has anyone on here tried it? I looked up the part numbers for a 92 WR500 and 92 YZ250 and they don't have the same part numbers.

Have the pipe off my 500 at the moment, I can try the 250 one on it tomorrow afternoon if you like. Would have thought the 250 would be a bit restricted.
Will check it out just as a matter of interest tho.

I put a 250 pipe on my 465 once.. gave it a step into power like the 250.. "interesting" with the bigger engine... would be the nice description.

The 250 pipe most definitely does not fit not even close.
Your best bet is YZ490

get a FMF Fatty YZ490 pipe, it fits...slightly touches guard at front, a hit with a hammer will fix it...

the YZ250 1992 silencer does fit it...ive done it......

Exhaust port timing is what the pipe is designed to work with and 250 timing won't be close to the 500. I believe FMF still makes a pipe for the 91-92 WR500.
Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

My 1992 WR500 original factory pipe was dented and re-welded a few times, so a few months ago I called FMF to buy a new pipe.   They said the WR500 pipes were out of production, discontinued, and only available on the secondary market (ie. fleabay).  Upon further discussions, they revealed that the YZ490 Fatty pipe was similiar, but not exact.....  (FMF was not very direct, but the only difference is a missing bracket near the first bend).  I was able to use the '83-90 YZ490 Fatty pipe on my WR500 with no problems.  You can still order the Fatty pipe from FMF today.  The missing bracket is not noticeable to me.

Mounting the new Fatty pipe was challenging.  I used a new Yamaha exhaust hanger from the top frame.  Threading the bolt into the pipe bracket thru the hanger was an exercise in contorsions...  My suggestion is to first mount the cylinder springs, then insert the pipe end into a loosely mounted silencer.  This gives enough play to thread into the pipe bracket.

For my silencer, I went with a FMF PowerCore.  It's slightly shorter than the factory one, and sounds good.  For woods riders the FMF TurbineCore with USDA Forest Service cert's would be a good choice.
