Yamaha Dirt Bikes by Colin MacKellar
« on: October 17, 2008, 07:11:46 AM »
Hello all,

I have scanned all the relevant IT pages from this great book, which covers Yamaha dirt bikes from 1968 onwards. This book is ' Must buy item ' if you ever see one at a sale. Over here in the UK a really clean copy can fetch £100.00 on eBay.

The book is quite accurate with regards to the IT series, with just a few typical data errors. Published in 1986, during Mrs Thatchers Dictatorship, the book has never been updated and does not cover the last of the IT200's. Also strangely the book does not cover the Yamaha TY series.

The 26 pages or so have been scanned at high resolution, and are clogging up my ancient computer. I would like someone to volunteer to covert them to a PDF file for me then post them on this site !!! I would probably have to send just a few pages at a time in order to stop my computer crashing !

PM or email me if you can help. Please see pages below. Dave R

Dave,

I will keep my eye out for a copy of that book! Have you found anyone to PDF the pages?
I did receive a couple via email from you but not the 26 (only received 2 pages).

If you would like me to make a PDF please email me all of the pages.

Cheers and thanks for the submission - I want the book now!

Jock

Jock,

I have borrowed one of the 'works' computers for the duration of our Christmas holidays.
It has XP and is about 20 times faster than my Windows 98 PC.
Just about broke every works rule in my contract smuggling it home !!

Hopefully I can get all these pages emailed to you over the next few days.

I just saw a copy on E-Bay...............for about $94.00 (U.S.). It's a great book alright, the person rebuilding my engine has a hardcover copy that is mint.
With a book of that quality and being out of print, well, I feel another barb-wire-enema coming from E-Bay!

That's quite a reasonable price for that book.

It is a great book, covering most of the Yamaha dirt bike range. The book helps you understand how all the Yamaha models are related to each other.

The big problem is that the author completely left out the Yamaha TY trials series, and of course these bikes shared many parts with the early DT's and IT's. And also it would be great if it were updated to include the WR models !

I'd buy it, if it was not for all the other money that I've been investing in the 400E. It is a fair amount of cabbage for a book, even if its a great book.

Damn, I bought 4 copies of this book back in the early '90's (i think).  One for me, gave one to my brother, one to my Dad, and was getting ready to send a copy to a friend who'd helped me out a lot when was killed riding the Acerbis Rally..

Have to see if I can get the other 2 back!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Same here, I think I picked up a glossy A4 sized Kawasaki book at the same time for a bargain price.

Mega new computer on order !

Hopefully I will be able to scan more of the book soon and post the results. That is when I have got used to using Vista ( just before it becomes obsolete thanks to Windows 7 !!! ).

I have also been given another computer running Linux which has a PDF creating program installed allegedly.

  Really ?

Would be interested if it were truly an update of the book I have. My book covers only Yamaha Dirtbikes, nothing to do with road or road racing, or even Trials for some reason.

The ' Yamaha Dirtbike ' book somehow manages to forget completely about the TY series despite the bikes being so interwoven with the DT, YZ, MX, and IT models.
I will look for anything relevant on the TY series, but I suspect that I have little of interest.

Did anyone ever put these into pdf format?  I have the files posted here put into a pdf.  Don't know how to post it but I'm sure I can figure it out if there is still the need for it.  Or if I get the original images I can try to pretty them up a bit (try to make the paper white and the letters darker black) and make them into a pdf.

Waiting to get a new scanner, copying tests and articles has pretty much worn my old one out !

Got on of my copies of Yamaha Dirtbikes autographed by Heikki Mikkola and Broc Glover at Classic Dirt today.

Heikki autographed the page with the Foreword he wrote for the book, and Broc autographed one of his photos inside.

Best of all, Broc told me he has a copy of the book too, and it's one of his favourite books.  He was looking through it just before he came to Oz.

He even knew where all the photos of him were inside!

Bill Forsythe (the VMX mag photographer) took a photo of Broc with the book.  If it's not going into VMX mag, I'll get him to send me a copy.
