yz 465 crankcase splitting
« on: February 21, 2017, 09:58:20 PM »
hi guys
I'm based in the uk Staffordshire 52 years old and had 2 strokes a while now.my first off roader mind!!
got a rd 350lc 1982 and a 392 rz 350 1987 which is a 392 now putting out 75bhp and 44ftlbs 0f torque
this is my first post so be gentle!
ive got a 465 where the kickstart shaft fits in the crankcase its broke off
I'm going to get welded up if I can get the crankcases apart.the gear shift star seems to be the problem
how can I split the cases all bolts are out and have a 10mm gap between them all round
heres some pics of what I'm working with

That selector drum will go through the case, the points of the selector will go through the gaps. What case splitting tool are you using?

thanks for the reply
i attempted splitting with a large screw driver but gave up as i didn't want to damage the mating surfaces
was the best tool to use

here's my setup.. it's cheap and a little nasty but I've split countless engines with it.

I've seen members on here with nicer setups but I can't find the pics at the moment.

the fit of the bearings on the shaft and in the cases holds it together.

I use a automotive harmonic balancer puller. Looks like this. You'll need to use your own metric hardware.........at least in my case.

Heat is your friend,
Get a electric heat gun and heat up the cases, this will aid in making the cases split easier.

Cheers,
Steve.
