I have the later model DT's ( post 1985) but in Australia they were all 6v till 1992

Having said that the lights will work on my DT's without the battery. The headlights work on a different circuit to the battery circuit, but the indicators and brake light will work once the motor is running at least until the regulator or rectifier burn out because they have been used without a battery.

sorry for the late reply i put a 6v battery in it cause all the light bulbs said 6v on them... NEW ISSUE the voltage regulator melted and I beleive someone has messed with the stator and wiring because I have to use the handle bar kill switch to shut off the engine. the key just shuts off the lights and horn I bought a new voltage regulator thinking it was fixed I rode the bike a mile from my house and it started smoking quite a bit so i shut it off and pushed the bike back (not fun) every time I rev the bike it smokes a lot any ideas im trying to do this as inexspensive as possible any ideas.

I think you'll need a wiring diag and trace every wire :(
You probably need a multimeter to check voltages.
My first guess is you have reg running off head light circuit (reg basically trickle charges batt, light circuit is 5 & or so). That is if same as early dt250, i think it is.
What goes up must come down, unless you broke a 'rod 😞
