1981 yz250/465 tank interchange ?
« on: January 05, 2017, 02:34:40 PM »
Will the yz465 tank which is larger fit on a 1981 yz250 ? and clear the pipe ?. Not a fan of the stock 250 tank and the 465 is larger.

I've got a funny feeling that 1981 yz250's came with a 465 tank here in oz. the frame seat and mounts are the same but they are a fatter tank. I couldn't see the yz465 pipe being any bigger at the left kneecap

Thanks rosey It just seems like the original tank is small. Bike is in decent shape. motor was rebuilt long ago along with front forks and swingarm then never rode. It is missing small parts. how bad were side panels to get and did they fit.

cost of bike was 250.00 so I got lots of room to play on this one. things it needs

1. Better plastic
2. carb is junk need new one
3. Kick starter stole one off the IT465 for now
4. frame is cracked in cross brace under seat so gotta weld it up.

Should fit straight on...but good luck finding one.
I know a few people who have put the 250 tank on the 465 because they couldn't find a replacement YZ465 tank.

However I see that VMX plastics in the US are planning to produce a range of plastics for Vintage Yamaha MX bikes so that might be worth investigation...

Cheers Steady

Barbie's front and rear guards are genuine , and side overs are DC which were average to fit. If you decide to get some don't drill any holes until you line them up. They have scuffed up a bit after three years but haven't broken. I have covered the inside of the exhaust sidecover with insulation to stop melting, and used the yamaha rubbers too.

My IT250 has a YZ250 tank.
Fits fine but leaves a small gap between tank and seat.
Which my mum helped me fill.
Agree with Rosey about D.C. sidepanels. Almost the right shape, somewhere to stick race numbers, haven't broken.
