I haven't posted for a while, so I guess it's time for a quick update.  My short term goal is to get the bike back on the road - I've done all the necessary to get it registered in my name, but here in RSA you need to have a roadworthy to get the bike legal, which means it needs to go for a test.  I've got limited time to do this, so I've been really pressing on, and not been too worried about making it look pretty!

The swingarm bushes were stuffed, and I decided to go the needle-roller route - I suppose I could have ordered bushes again, but the swingarm is a perfect match for off the shelf needle rollers, and it was crying out for the conversion to be done - I swear it was probably designed for needle rollers and then to cut cost Yamaha used a nylon bush, so I just knocked in some needle-rollers, put seals on both sides and used the original inners which were not even worn.  Simple.

While the swingarm was off I decided to have it powder-coated, with the handlebars, top-yoke, clamps and side-stand.

Other then that, it was just given a full-on service - re-greased the headstock bearings, did all the drum-brake pivots, oiled and greased all the cables, and a few key new parts that I like to change on all my bikes - new OEM grips, Ignition switch, instrument rubber dampers, all new rubber grommits - small things which just make a bike feel new again!

And here's where we are at the moment - just waiting for the seat to come back from the Upholsterers - I didn't use Muz  for a cover this time - I had a mate who was visiting in the UK, and he brought one back for me from there - it's not as good quality as the one Muz did for me for my 200, but at least I didn't have to pay postage  ;D

And it runs pretty much how I remember my old A/C 175 ran - not as much torque as the 175, but a bit smoother - probably because the 125LC has that balance shaft.  Brakes aren't that great - I've been spoilt with disks I think!

Now the question is what to do with it - full rebuild, YZ490 replica look, or just leave it as a nice original unrestored 125 and enjoy it a bit....

Time will tell I guess

Took it for COR on Monday - breezed through. So spent most of yesterday behaving like a teenager blasting around the neighbourhood. Eventually I got the disapproval look from my neighbour so I had to park it. I'll have to take off the front-end again unfortunately - the headset ball bearings and races were iffy and it was always going to be a risk putting them back. Hopefully I can find a set of taper-rollers which I can retro-fit. Should make it a whole lot better.

Cool ride....what does it cost for annual registration of a 125 over there? (different in each state/territory here)

Cheers,
Chris.

The COR was R350 (divide by 9 for AUD) - that's a once-off and so long as the bike stays in your name you don't have to take it again.

Annual Licensing fees for a Motorbike (any size) is I think about R160 - tbh I'm not 100% sure - But its definitely under R200.

From what I see on the forum, and from chatting to some mates I have in NZ and AUS, we have a much easier time here in RSA when it comes to vehicles - no demerit points, no annual Roadworthy test, no compulsory insurance.  Hell I put the 125 on the trailer to take it to the COR because It didn't have a numberplate, and the tester commented that he would have just ridden it without a plate!  And he didn't even test the noise level - sounds about right he said  ???

But of course then in 2014 to 2015 we also had 4500 people die in Road Accidents.  So I guess there is something to be said about that.

It's a funny old country RSA - combo of first world and third world all rolled into one!

Wow! Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I am in the process of viewing unread threads, and couldn't avoid writing: you did an amazing job again Andymann!
