I guess that is one way to do it. Hope you are taking note of where all of the components go and their polarity.

Can you trace out a circuit while you have it clean? Is the chip a common one or custom?

This is way beyond me a Friend is repairing the CDI he's a electronics engineer for Union Switch & Signal, I think I could get Bill to build new CDIs. This is child's play to him.

The killer will be the chip. If it is a custom job, they wont be available at all would be my guess, same if is a Field Programmable chip, but I doubt that would be the case for this age of CDI.

I reckon that big yellow blob might just be the C from CDI though.

Bill ( Mr. Wizard ) says the ICs nothing special the CDI had a broken resister & a blown out Cap.

The interesting part of this the 81/83 uses a split CDI charging top coil for timing with the pulse coil.

The split coil stator. Blue wire in Red out.

Bill is amazing! He's a pilot too Bill is a instructor with a twin turbine rating we would fly on Sundays for hr's looking for old cars at 500ft!

This is the coil that makes all the difference between the pre 1981 Stator & CDI.
