DT230 Piston
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:26:22 AM »
Hi there. I need a piston kit for a 99DT230, any ideas? It looks like a wr200 piston is the same size 66.8mm but not sure if pin height and port cutaways are the same. Any help would be great. Havent tried genuine yet as i imagine it would be pretty expensive.Might have to!
Cheers, Shane

I am almost sure it's the same piston as the WR200 one! I'll know for sure later in the day! Cheers, Fanis

Thanks Fanis. If anyone can help me with the dt230 pin height i should be able to confirm if the WR200 piston will fit. The bore is the same so the 200 stroke must be shorter. I just dont know if the pin height is different or they used a different length con rod. I have been told a WR2OO piston will fit but i cant find any 230 piston dimensions to compare.
Cheers, Shane

Sorry for the late reply, no internet on my father's village. I am now 100% sure it's the same piston. A friend of mine had his DT230 open for a top end refresh and the 4tp a 4bf or 3XP pistons are the same in pin height, ring groves and everything. That's a good thing with Yamaha. The bad thing is they change the part numbers and WE can't be sure about interchangeability!

Hey Fanis, thank you for that. Would it be possible to get the pin height off your friends piston? I priced a genuine piston and it was about three times the price of a Wiseco WR200 piston kit. The more i find out about these unusual bikes the more i want to get mine back together!
Cheers, Shane  :)

I'll call him later in the day, but I'm not so sure since he's doing his military service. I'll get back to you asap!

However, overpriced genuine parts don't surprise me anymore. I asked almost all athenian dealers on TZR 250 3MA pistons, and the answer was 163Ä each, no pins, rings etc. Now, isn't that crazy? And another fact here. DT200R rear shock costs about 437Ä if you order it as part of the 2YY or 3ET (the variations imported in greece). However if you ordered it for the Oceanian model 3CJ the shock only costed 180Ä. Prices were valid up to 3 years ago. I don't know now!

Cheers, Fanis

Hey there Shane! As I thought he is unavailable now, and he won't be out till Christmas! Sorry man. If you want I can measure my old WR200 piston. Just tell me what exactly you want me to measure. Bottom of skirt to center of pin hole, or what?
Cheers, Fanis.

Yes, I used a WR200 piston kit in my DT 230 and it worked perfectly. They WERE a little different when side-by-side, but that thing flies.
cheers,
